High-Speed Diagnostic System
The Accelerate Diagnostics ID/AST system delivers a highly functional enclosure with simple workflow and stand out design.
The ID/AST system from Accelerate Diagnostics is the first of its kind to provide identification and MIC based susceptibility results direct from sample in hours instead of days. These rapid results will enable clinicians to optimize antimicrobial therapy sooner which increases the potential to save lives. In addition, the technology could reduce hospital length of stay, leading to a significant impact on overall cost of care. Accelerate approached Bridge Design in need of an instrument enclosure that would fit into the tight space of a diagnostics lab, and a consumable that could hold a disparate array of individual parts while minimizing the amount of hands-on time required by the lab personnel. Taking requirements directly from their microbiology laboratory market, Accelerate also sought an inspiring industrial design that reinforced their overall brand values, manifested simplicity, and was ‘approachable’ in the way the product looked and worked.
The final design of the instrument and consumable streamlines and simplifies the user experience and brings visual strength to support an emerging brand. It addresses the ergonomic and workflow needs of the laboratory without constraining the function of the device and addresses the inherent supply chain and manufacturing requirements. The solution is a result of close collaboration between design and engineering teams to create design features such as:
- an iconic industrial design that reflects on the outside the innovative and disruptive nature of the technology on the inside
- a consumable that consolidated 9 disparate elements (reagents, antimicrobial agents, etc.) while addressing complex supply chain and manufacturing needs into an all-in-one easy to use kit
- a consumable door that rotates and wraps into the enclosure to minimize footprint and increase scalability by permitting multiple instruments to be installed in tight spaces
- simple one-button loading versus the multistep workflow of today’s conventional methods
The design is significantly more compact and easier to use than the array of diagnostic tools currently available for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The team created a visual design that celebrates the product’s circular internal carousel - one of its key innovative components - resulting in a design that builds on the speed and convenience of the core technology. In addition, the design results in a differentiated approach to providing susceptibility results through an all-in-one consumable and one button loading not available with competing systems.
