Boston Scientific Genesys HTA System

The Genesys HTA System is a hysteroscopic thermal ablation device intended to ablate, or cause scarring of, the endometrial lining of the uterus in premenopausal women - for whom childbearing is complete - with menorrhagia (excessive uterine bleeding) due to benign causes. In developing this product Boston Scientific was looking to make menorrhagia treatment safer, more effective, more approachable, and intuitive.

Challenge:

To design a device that improved workflow, decreased cognitive workload, & increased safety while undertaking the logistics of:

  • A complex GUI (78 steps for set up requiring extensive training)
  • Continual visual monitoring required during procedure
  • Undue cognitive & physical workload
  • Oversized components with angles / crevices that impacted ability to clean
  • 26 feet of tubing

Solution:

Utilizing a multi-disciplinary team, Ximedica worked to address the needs of physicians and patients alike through developing the second generation product.

For this project, Ximedica drew from their expert and collaborative teams: Human Factors Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, and Research.
A safer, more intuitive, space-efficient means of treatment.

Results:

The redesigned unit took up less space in already-crowded clinical settings while other components were combined into a portable cartridge to reduce the number of steps in the set-up process, enhance reliability and enable users to have more accurate control. With the improved system, less training time was required, risk was mitigated, and the product secured regulatory approval.
