FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

XIMEDICA® ADDS MEDICAL SIMULATION TO ITS RESEARCH  SERVICES

June 8, 2010, Providence, RI – Ximedica, a medical device development firm offering integrated research, product development, and manufacturing services, has added medical simulations to its growing set of capabilities. Working closely with a local Medical Simulation Center as well as orchestrated simulations around the USA and globally, the company can conduct user research in a highly realistic medical simulation setting.  Normally used for medical training of residents, the use of medical simulation technology offers unique possibilities for research and usability testing of medical devices in the development cycle. This can allow for compressed product development timelines and increased research opportunities for Ximedica and its clients.

Medical simulation uses life-like scenarios or medical events to create a low-risk learning situation for medical staff and others.  Through the use of high-tech mannequins in a re-created hospital environment, participants learn to work through medical crises without the risk of harming patients.  The use of simulation technology also affords medical device developers a number of advantages: by working with real clinicians in a simulated clinical setting, issues around patient confidentiality and clinician distraction are minimized.  Also, access can often be arranged on relatively short notice, and development teams can gain access to user insight as it becomes necessary, without having to wait for lengthy approvals to access hospitals’ protected areas.

Recent projects conducted by Ximedica have included in-depth interviews with surgeons, nurses and biomedical engineers.  By bringing working prototypes into this setting and using them with high-tech and life-like mannequins, Ximedica has been able to obtain quick and valuable feedback for its clients and product development teams.

“The use of medical simulation has been a great asset to us on recent projects; the ability to configure the space to simulate an ICU on one day, and an OR on the next, has been incredibly valuable to our design and engineering teams, as well as our clients,” said Jessica Willing-Pichs, a Principal Research and Project Strategist at Ximedica.
