Ximedica to speak at The World Congress Leadership Summit on Process Improvement

June 24, 2010

The 4th annual summit convenes hospitals, health systems, health plans and medical/specialty group practices to share innovations in continuous quality improvement including Lean, Human Factors Engineering, Six Sigma, Baldrige, and other methodologies.

Attendees will hear best practices and thought provoking discussions on strategies for streamlining change management, increasing operational efficiency, improving overall organizational performance and the quality of patient services while eliminating waste, coordinating care and ensuring patient safety by the nation's leading health care organizations.

Ximedica is proud to be co-leading the Performance Excellence segment with a discussion on how Human Factors Engineering was applied to process flow to mitigate risk for wrong site surgery. Kat Darula, Director of Design Research at Ximedica, will collaborate with Dr. Mary Reich Cooper, Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer of Lifespan, to speak about how Ximedica’s human-centered approach of a multi-disciplinary, multi-site, collaborative evaluation combined design and engineering research techniques to identify latent and explicit risk points in the surgical site identification process.  A risk severity assessment identified opportunity areas where the most impactful solutions could be developed to create a more robust process including: a revised Universal Protocol, improved patient education, a digital patient procedure information package, request for surgery software enhancements and task shifting to prior day of surgery. Direction for future research will include pre/post implementation metrics to measure success.
